It is a specialty confectionery representing Cheonan City. It is made by baking walnuts, bean jam, and flour produced in Gwangdeok-myeon into a walnut shape as the main ingredients.   Origin of  Hodu-gwaja  

 

The walnut confectionery in Cheonan was initiated by the original Hakhwa Hodo Confectionery in Daeheung-dong, Cheonan City. Since the mid-1970s, a number of similar bakery shops have appeared around the Cheonan Station area, and the monopoly of the original Hakhwa Hodo Confectionery has been transformed into a competitive system.

 

As of December 23, 2008, the Cheonan Specialty Walnut Producers Association [Agricultural Association Corporation] registered the name of'Cheonan Walnut' in geographical indication registration [Registration No. 18], making the name Cheonan Walnut unusable in other regions. Became. In addition, the original Hakhwa Hodo Confectionery registered the name “Hodo Confectionery”, so other confectionery companies in Cheonan could not use the name “Cheonan Hodo Confectionery”, and it became generally walnut confectionery. Due to the registration of such geographical indications, Cheonan walnuts could not be used in other regions except Cheonan.

 

The walnut cake was walnut bread and walnut dumplings. It is said that walnut confectionery has one side of the walnut cake, but the taste of walnut confection depends on the bean paste [garment] anko. Six stores increased. In 2012, there were a total of 49 stores [35 stores in Dongnam-gu, 14 stores in Seobuk-gu]. However, as of April 2013, the number of stores is gradually decreasing, with three stores being closed.

 

The amount of walnuts produced in Gwangdeok-myeon during a year is about 40 tons per 50,000 trees. Walnut confectionery stores are sold at 60 to 70 stores, including 50 walnut confectionery stores reported in Cheonan City, and walnut confectionery stores and bakeries that have not been declared. Therefore, it was found that the supply of walnuts was extremely short and was being replaced by imports.
